Contradicts public opinion Argument: Public majority
Counter: Public minority
In my fifth argument I discuss the lack of public support for the use of executive orders. I acknowledge the counterargument that a small portion of Americans agree with the actions being taken. |
Overall, many Americans have spoken out against the executive orders that have been signed by President Obama. Kurt Eichenwald, writer for Newsweek Global, has reported that a total of “51 percent of the American public believes that Obama should not short circuit the process” (par. 1). American citizens are aware that President Obama is choosing to bypass part of the government. The public is upset because not only are legislators being ignored, but so is the public opinion. The public is becoming “disarmed” of their voice in the government. With over half the the United States citizens in disagreement, President Obama should realize that the actions he is taking are not the actions that he should be taking.
While many citizens are proven to disagree with the use of executive orders, a small sum have come out in support of the Obama administration. Eichenwald concluded only 11 percent of the American population agree that the President should act without congressional approval (par. 1), These approval ratings are low. If President Obama truly cared about helping the American people he would see that he is not helping anyone. Assuming that President Obama’s actions were actually benefiting anyone's lives more, citizens would agree with his actions. His executive orders are simply not helping anyone, and the American public can see that. Not only are government officials taking action against the President of the United States of America for his action, but citizens nationwide are a witness to the massive amounts of executive orders that have been signed and the little to no improvement as a result. |
